The US military has carried out "limited strikes" on Qeshm Island in Iran - hours before the midterms are due to take place.
The action was limited, the officials said, with no immediate plans to escalate. The strikes come on the eve of the midterm elections.
Monday's U.S. airstrikes on Qeshm Island were in response to an Iranian attack on a U.S. aircraft, said one official.
Earlier on Monday, sounds of explosions on the island had been reported by Iranian state media outlet IRNA.
The strikes, which appeared to be limited as opposed to a full return to hostilities, came on the eve of crucial American midterm elections.
