Bako-Bewele's new last name comes from his paternal grandparents, who are Nigerian.
The Green Bay Packers' starting right tackle is changing his name from Zach Tom to Zach Bako-Bewele as a way of paying tribute to his Nigerian ancestry. Bako-Bewele told reporters Sunday that Bako is the last name of his father’s mother and Bewele is the last name of his father’s father. Bako-Bewele said he had been thinking about doing this for a few years, “probably back since college at least.”
The Packers are expected to have the same starting right tackle as last season when they take the field in September, but there will be a different name on the back of his jersey.
The player wearing No. 50 for the Green Bay Packers will have a new name on the back of their uniform for the 2026 season.
