LeBron James plans to leave the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency and play for a new team in 2026. James spent the last eight seasons with the Lakers.
A four-time NBA MVP and the league's all-time leading scorer, James completed his record-setting 23rd NBA season.
LeBron James will continue his NBA career during the 2026-27 season but has informed the Lakers that the franchise can move on without him.
LeBron's time with the Lakers appears to be over.
LeBron James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, will return for an unprecedented 24th season but not with the Los Angeles Lakers."To be able to thrive in that role for that period of time and then have to step back into the role that I’ve been accustomed with over my career, over my life, playing a sport and being able to thrive under that, and then just my teammates allowing me to lead them under extreme circumstances, that was pretty cool for me at this stage in my career," James said.
James, 41, played eight seasons with the Lakers and led the franchise to its 17th NBA championship in the 2019-2020 season.
LeBron James will leave the Lakers and continue his career elsewhere, according to ESPN.
