Former Formula 1 driver and Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi dies at the age of 59.
Paralympic champion and ex-Formula One driver Alessandro 'Alex' Zanardi has died at the age of 59, his family said in a statement on Saturday. The Italian lost both legs in a car racing accident at the Lausitzring circuit in Germany in 2001.
Zanardi lost both of his legs in a 2001 crash before beginning a second career as a competitive handcyclist.
Zanardi, who lost his legs in a racing crash, was credited with helping transform the perception of disability in Italy.
