US Treasury says it removed 518 Syrian individuals and entities from its list of sanctions after president's decree.
Donald Trump signed an executive order terminating a US sanctions program on Syria, allowing an end to the country's isolation from international financial system and building on Washington's pledge to help it rebuild after a devastating civil war.
He had previously announced he would lift sanctions in hopes of stabilizing the country.
White House executive order will remove sanctions on Syria as President Trump meets with controversial new Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose group overthrew Assad in March.
President Trump announced last month that the U.S. would lift all sanctions on the country.
